Hello students in this session we will study about electrical permittivity and Dielectric constant and also learn some important points about it. So lets start…

What is Electrical Permittivity ?

The medium surrounding the charged bodies affect the electric force. It is observed that the electric force between two point charges is maximum in free space. A medium always reduces this electric force.

👉The property of the medium which influences the electric force between the charges is known as the electrical permittivity (ϵ).

👉 The value of Electric permittivity of free space is 8.85 × 10-12 Nm2/C2.

Relative Electrical Permittivity or Dielectric Constant

Relative electrical permittivity or Dielectric constant of a medium is defined as the ratio of permittivity of the medium to the permittivity of free space or air.

Hence Relative electrical permittivity of a medium is also defined as the electrostatic force (Fo ) between two charges in air to the force (F) between the same two charges kept in the medium at same distance.

👉Relative electrical permittivity or Dielectric constant has no units and no dimensions.

👉Relative electrical permittivity or Dielectric constant of Water is 80 approx.

Conclusion :
1) when we put a glass slab between two charges, it will decrease the electric force between them .
2) When we put a metallic slab between two charges, it will decrease the electric force to zero.

Q. 1 Two point charges in air at a distance of 20 cm. from each other interact with a certain force. At what distance from each other should these charges be placed in oil of relative permittivity 5 to obtain the same force of interaction –
(A) 8.94 × 10-2 m (B) 0.894 × 10-2 m
(C) 89.4 × 10-2 m (D) 8.94 × 102 m

Hello Students,
Physics is the most crucial subject for all the students of class 11th, 12th and also for the students who are preparing for NEET or JEE. Physics is very important to understand many higher level concepts, which are derived from the concepts that we learn in class 11th and 12th.

So better understanding of all the concepts in physics is very necessary, not only to get good marks in physics exam but also to learn physics more effectively.
