What is Electric Charge ?
The property of the material due to which it exerts or experiences electrical and magnetic effects is called electric charge.
Example: Paper pieces attracts towards the Plastic scale, Lightning in thunderstorm etc.
Electrostatics- It is the branch of physics in which we study about the static charge forces, fields and potentials arising from static charges.

Important Facts about Electric Charge:
1. There are only two types of charges positive and negative.
2. Like charges repel and unlike charges attract each other.
3. Unlike charges cancel each other’s effect when come in contact.
4. Normally the materials are electrical neutral because the charges (electrons & protons) are exactly balanced in an atom.
5. A body gets positive charge when loose some electrons and gain negative charge by gaining some electrons.
6. The device used to detect charge on a body is called “Gold Leaf electroscope“.
7. An electric charge can creates electric field (E), Magnetic field (B) and electromagnetic waves.
8. Any excess charge given to a conductor, always resides on the outer surface of the conductor.
Electric charge is uniformly distributed on a uniform surface and distributed non-uniformly on a non-uniform surface. The surface charge density will be very large at sharp points of the conductor.
👉 Lightning rods used on tall buildings to prevent lightning from striking the building, work on this principle. Lighting rods either neutralize or conduct the charge of the cloud to the ground and the building remain safe.

🔴 Charge is always conserved but mass is not conserved.
🔴 Charge cannot exist without mass but mass can exist without charge.
Conductor and Insulator
Conductors : Materials in which the outer orbit electrons of each atom are weakly bound and these electrons are almost free to move inside the material are known as conductors.
Insulators : Materials in which all the electrons are tightly bound to their atoms and are not free to move are known as insulators.
